HOUSTON - Sophomore Amy Halsey and the freshman tandem of Diane Gu and Carlyann Miller all won individual events to lead the Rice swimmers to a second place finish at the Owls' own Marriottt West Loop-TYR Rice Invitational, Saturday afternoon at the Rice Pool.
Rice posted a team score of 566 points for the two-day, 17-event meet to take second place behind Oregon State (644 points). Villanova was third with 453 points while Arkansas was fourth (282 points).
Gu, who won the 100-yard freestyle on the opening day of the meet Friday evening, came back with a win in the 50 (24.06) on Saturday. Miller won the 200-free with a season-best time of 1:51.85 and the two freshman combined with senior Laura Healey and junior Andrea Hurn to take 400-free relay with a season-best mark of 3:29.20. Halsey followed a Friday victory in the 200-backstroke with a win the 200-individual medley over a field of 12 participants on Saturday. Halsey and Gu also paced the Owls to a second place in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:48.54.
The Blue and Gray returns to dual meet action at home on Nov. 12. The Owls host Tulane in a Conference USA clash at the Rice Pool at 1 pm.
