Houston - Special teams problems that have haunted Rice all along during its 1-9 season grabbed special attention during Tuesday's workout on the grass practice field.
The Owls have been successful on only five of nine field goal attempts, including a miss from 36 yards in last week's 31-28 loss to UCF.
"We're trying to find a good field-goal kicker and be consistent in that," said coach Ken Hatfield following the workout. "That's really hurt us."
With Houston ranked among the best Conference USA in punt returns, that aspect of special teams is also seeing more attention in practice. The Owls allowed a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown by UCF, the second that has been run back for a score this season.
"We're got to work hard on that because that's a Houston strength," added Hatfield.
The Owls and Cougars meet Saturday in the Game for the Bayou Bucket at Robertson Stadium at 3 pm. Houston is 5-5 overall and needs a win to qualify for bowl consideration.
