ATLANTA - With a rugged lineup of events that didn't quite play into the Owls' strengths like Friday's opening day of the meet, the Rice swimmers dropped from second place to fourth after the conclusion of Saturday's second round of competition at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta.
Sophomore Amy Halsey and freshman Skylar Craig both reached the championship finals of two events Saturday to pace Rice to a team score of 366 points. Florida State leads the meet with 803.5 points, followed by Georgia Tech (393) and Florida Atlantic (370.5). The Owls managed to hold off Western Kentucky (347), Gardner-Webb (199), Miami-Fla. (176) and the University of New Orleans (46) heading into Sunday's final round.
Halsey was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.22 and sixth in the 400-individual medley (4:35.81). Craig was eighth in the 100-backstroke (1:00.55) and she was the top Rice finisher with an eighth in the 100-butterfly (58.38). Sophomore Jennifer Hill placed fifth in the 400-IM ahead of Halsey and the trio of Hill, Halsey and Craig was part of a 200-medley relay squad that took sixth out of a total of 16 different teams entered.
Freshman Carlyann Miller and sophomore Carey Hain scored for Rice in the 200-freestyle. Miller was fifth overall while Hain clocked a season-best 1:52.99 to win the consolation final.
Just when it looked like three fifth place finishes by Miller, Halsey and Hill might prove to be the highlight of the meet for the Blue and Gray, the Owls' 800-freestyle relay stepped up to close out the day. Hill, Hain, Miller and Brittany Massengale teamed to take second in the event with a mark of 7:34.11. It was Rice's first time to swim the 800-relay this season, but it is also now one of the fastest 800's in Conference USA this year.
The invitational meet concludes with six events on Sunday. Fans can follow the results of each event live on the web. At the start of the day's prelims or finals, link to the Georgia Tech Invitational web page.
