DiSesa, Karas Advance To Quarterfinals at Regional Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Senior Blair DiSesa and sophomore Dominique Karas both advanced to the main draw quarterfinals to lead Rice on Sunday at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships in College Station.
DiSesa, seeded ninth in the singles draw, swept Baylor's Zuzana Krchnakova 6-2, 6-3 to begin the day. The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., native then beat seventh-seeded Sarah Foster of Texas A&M 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the regional quarterfinals for the third-straight year. DiSesa will face third-seeded Helena Besovic of TCU for a spot in the semifinals.
Karas held of the Bears' Iva Mihaylova for a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win in the round of 32, then beat her second seeded opponent of the tournament, number-16 Breda Kovac of Southeastern Louisiana, 6-2, 6-2. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native next faces Klara Zrustova, the number-10 seed from Baylor.
Sophomore Christine Dao scored a pair of wins on Sunday to move into the consolation draw quarterfinals. She first held off Iva Velkovska of Southeastern Louisiana 6-3, 3-6, 10-3, then was leading Anastasia Dubova of LSU 3-0 in the first set when her opponent retired with an injury.
In doubles action, DiSesa and freshman Alanna Rodgers, seeded fifth, scored an 8-4 victory over Klara Jagosova and Anete Rozkalne of Texas-Arlington to advance to the main draw quarterfinals. The Owls next face the top-seeded duo of Sarah Foster and Anna Lubinsky from Texas A&M.
Senior Medeja Egic and sophomore Kimberley Patenaude posted a pair of wins to move into the doubles consolation finals. The Rice tandem first beat Sam Houston State's Emma McDougall and Peta Taylor 8-6, then downed Houston's Tiffany McLaughlin and Yolandi Terblanche 8-6.
