HOUSTON - Rice opened the 2006 season with a pair of commanding wins, dropping Lamar 6-0 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7-0 on Saturday at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
The 51st-ranked Owls began the day winning a tough doubles point. After splitting at one and three doubles, the tandem of Medeja Egic and Kimberley Patenaude edged Tanya Roberts and Pamela Martinez 9-8 (4) to secure the first point of the day. Christine Dao and Tiffany Lee teamed to win at the three position, taking an 8-3 victory over Mariantonietta Guiterrez and Kendall Gibbs.
Rice regrouped heading into singles and was dominant with five straight-set victories. Blair DiSesa, ranked 31st nationally, scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over Andrea Martin at the top of the ladder. Playing at the number-two position for the first time, Dao was solid in her 6-4, 6-0 victory against Tara Shelander. Amy Cao also scored a win with her 6-3, 6-1 decision against Gibbs.
Making their collegiate dual-match debuts, Alanna Rodgers and Tiffany Lee were impressive in the middle of the lineup. Rodgers scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Roberts at number three, and Lee slammed Martinez in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph and number four.
Against the Islanders, the Owls were in total control. All three Rice doubles teams won 8-0 to establish early dominance. In singles, all six Owls were up in the first set when rain moved into the area causing an hour delay.
The weather only delayed the inevitable as Rice cruised to the win. Lee blanked Lana Burton at the four spot, while DiSesa, Rodgers, and Egic all won 6-1, 6-0.
Next week, the Owls hit the road with a challenging trek to California to face 12th-ranked UCLA on Thursday and 28th-ranked Pepperdine on Friday.
