LOS ANGELES - The 51st-ranked Rice women faced a tough challenge at 12th-ranked UCLA, falling 7-0 on Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles, Calif.
After a loss at number-three doubles, the Owls had tight battles at both of the top two positions. The Bruins' Laura Gordon and Riza Zalameda edged Rice's Blair DiSesa and Alanna Rodgers at number one with a 9-7 win. At number two, Medeja Egic and Kimberley Patenaude fell to UCLA's Anna-Viktoria Lind and Alex McGoodwin 9-7 as the Bruins took the first point.
UCLA picked up the pace in singles, sweeping five of the six ladder positions. Rice's Tiffany Lee, playing at the four position, won her first set, but couldn't hold on against Lind in a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6) loss. The Bruins' Zalameda, who finished the 2005 season ranked 18th nationally but didn't compete for UCLA last fall, defeated DiSesa, currently ranked 31st, 6-2, 6-3 at the top spot.
The Owls continue their demanding California trip tomorrow when they square off against 28th-ranked Pepperdine.
