Houston - Chase Clement will get his first career start at quarterback when Rice hosts Navy Saturday at Rice Stadium.
The redshirt freshman from San Antonio (Alamo Heights HS) got the nod from head coach Ken Hatfield this week mainly because he's the healthiest Owl signal-caller. Sophomore Joel Armstrong has started the first five games, but he's ailing with a shoulder injury that has reduced his practice time this week.
"We've given Joel's shoulder time to heal more," said Hatfield following Wednesday's practice. "We'll take the pressure off of him. We'll let him do the things he does well, but he hasn't been able to throw the ball much this week."
Clement is the Owls' leading passer this season, throwing for 233 yards and one touchdown this season.
"With Chase being healthy and being able to work with the first team most of the time, it's the right thing to do," said Hatfield, who added that Armstrong will play in a reserve role in the game.
Game time Saturday in the Stadium is 5 pm (CDT).
