Houston - Rice began preparations for Navy's triple-option offense on Tuesday... again.
The Owls and Midshipmen will finally hook up Saturday afternoon at Rice Stadium, almost a month after originally scheduled. The Sept. 24 date was moved to Saturday, what had been an open date on both teams' schedules, due to Hurricane Rita.
Navy lost its first two games of the season before embarking on a three-game winning streak, and it's the Midshipmen's confidence that comes with winning that concerns Rice coach Ken Hatfield.
"A month ago when they had only played two games, they looked a lot different than what they do now," said Hatfield. "They seem to be playing with a lot more confidence and their quarterback (Lamar Owens) seems to be making a lot more things happen."
With both teams running option offenses, each should be able to simulate the other's attack with a greater degree of efficiency in practice. "We know what we can do to challenge the defense," is how Hatfield describes that familiarity.
Game time Saturday in the Stadium is 5 pm (CDT).
