Women's Cross Country: Freshman Leads Owls at NCAA Regionals

WACO ? Rice freshman Marissa Daniels paced the Owls to a top-10 finish at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course Saturday.

Rice was without its top runner, junior Kate Gorry, on Saturday, but that didn?t matter to Daniels. A rookie from Pearland (Pearland HS), Daniels finished sixth overall individually, completing the 6K course in 20:49. It was the fifth top-10 finish for the Owl newcomer this season who helped the Owls to a second-place finish at the Western Athletic Conference championships last month. Rice finished ninth as a team on Saturday.

Laura Kelley finished 39th overall with a time of 22:11, while Anna Reeve was 43rd.

WAC champion Southern Methodist and SEC powerhouse Arkansas earned the NCAA automatic bid finishing one-two, respectively.

Rice will now wait for the NCAA cross country selections to find out if they will be running Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
