Three Owl seniors will be playing their final home match of their collegiate careers when Rice (16-15, 5-9) hosts SMU (13-13, 4-9) on Saturday. Remi Aderohunmu is a 5-10 outside hitter from Irving, Tex. who has been sidelined for most of this season with injuries. During her junior year, she played in 87 games in 31 matches, making four starts. She tallied a personal best 17 digs against Mississippi in 1999, and notched a career high eight kills twice in 1997. She has served up 15 service aces during her four years, in which she has played in 111 games, knocked down 85 kills and has collected 187 digs. She will graduate in May 2002 with a degree in psychology.
"Karolina and Klara Zelinka have left their mark on Rice volleyball," fifth year head coach Julio Morales said. "They have been important to this team." The sisters have started every match alongside each other this season, with Klara playing in 116 games and Karolina in 117. During her four years, Klara has amassed 952 kills, which ties her for 9th best all-time at Rice. She will finish her career third at Rice in digs, and currently stands at fourth in block assists with 275 and owns the seventh spot all-time with 296 total blocks. This season, she has knocked down 290 kills, hit the court for 316 digs and has gone up for 86 blocks. Klara has recorded seven double-doubles this year and will graduate in May 2002 with a degree in kinesiology.
Outside hitter Karolina Zelinka ends her Rice career in the top 10 in six different categories. Her 1,200 career digs ranks her first all-time at Rice, and 10th in the WAC. She will finish third all-time in kills, having knocked down 1,490 during her career. She is tied for ninth in service aces with 119, and holds the eighth spot all-time in block assists with 210 and total blocks with 237. In the 31 matches she's played in this season, she has tallied 480 kills, 425 digs and 94 total blocks. Over her career she has played in 433 games, 10th all-time for the Owls. "It's been fun being a part of Rice volleyball," Zelinka said. "I couldn't have imagined not playing with my sister and the teammates I've had." She will graduate in May with a degree in art history.
"A win for these three seniors would be a good home ending to a season that a number of people thought was lost," added Morales.
The Owls will finish their 2000 season on the road on Tuesday at nationally ranked Hawaii.
