Football: Practice Report #26

Not that either one will have those duties when the Owls host Fresno State Thursday night, but it did give credence to Ken Hatfield's idea that this game can serve as a new beginning for his 1-4 Owls.
Hurd, who had won the starting job with an injury-free spring and fall, has not played since breaking a bone in his left ring finger in the first half of the season-opening win over Houston. Herm injured a shoulder returning a punt in that game, and although he's been able to practice the past two weeks, he has not seen any game action since the opener.
"Jeremy is coming back well," said Hatfield following Tuesday's workout. "The biggest thing is that he's able to take snaps from our centers.
"He's just rusty. He lacks from the time off when he could have been getting better. He's been able to maintain his conditioning, which is a big plus."
Since the Owls will have only three practice days prior to Thursday's game, Hatfield allows that Hurd would have benefited from more practice time, "but I think he can help us somewhere in the game."
Thursday's game (6:07 pm CDT) will be nationally telecast by Fox Sports Net. Fresno State is 1-2 on the season, and the Bulldogs will be making their 2000 Western Athletic Conference debut.
