Football Practice Report #31

Sophomore Jamie Tyler, the starter in the last three games, missed most of the last three quarters last Saturday at Southern Methodist with a strained hamstring. Sophomore Derek Gary, who had a 101-yard game against San Jose State earlier this season, then got all the carries at the position. Already out were senior Clint Leschber (knee) and redshirt freshman Ben Amis (leg).
All four were moving about at Tuesday's practice, giving Hatfield hope for this weekend's showdown with the Bulldogs (6-3, 3-1).
"It was good Leschber out here to do a few things," he said. "Jamie walked around a little bit, and we'll see what he can do to help us. Ben also was running around."
Rice (5-4, 4-1) still holds a half-game lead over the Bulldogs in the Western Athletic Conference race despite the 27-2 loss at SMU. The Owls can clinch at least a tie for the '99 WAC title with a win in Saturday's game (4 pm CST).
