Volleyball: Owls Lose To Fresno State

Houston The Rice volleyball team lost its final home match of the season Saturday night, falling to Fresno State 6-15, 17-19, 15-11, 9-15.
In their last match at Autry Court, the Owls' two seniors displayed the leadership of veterans, pacing the offensive attack. Senior setter Soleil Thon had one of the top performances of her career, notching personal bests of 62 assists, five kills and five blocks. Senior outside hitter Kelly Smith recorded a team-high 26 kills and added 13 digs. Outside hitter Leigh Leman also topped personal best marks, knocking down 20 kills, as she led the defensive effort with 25 digs. Overall, four Owls ended the match with double-doubles, as the team hit .218 and put down 13 blocks.
For Fresno State, Anamie Buckelew collected her eighth career 20-kill match, with a new personal-best of 28. Adrienne Sankey added 24 kills and a team-high 22 digs, as Diann Aufdermaur recorded 80 assists and 11 digs. Five Bulldogs had double-digit kills, with four hitting over .300.
The Bulldogs improved to 14-11 on the year and 8-4 in the conference, as the Owls fell to 11-20 on the season and 2-9 in league play.
Rice will travel to Hawaii this week where it will take on the Rainbow Wahine Thursday night at 11 pm CST.
