Football: Five Named To Academic All-District Team

Named to the 23-man team were running back Mike Gingrich, center Matt Baldwin, defensive end Jake Jackson, defensive tackle Judd Smith and safety Travis Ortega.
Texas Tech had four players named to the squad. The all-district team is now eligible for the academic all-America team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Gingich, a senior from Spring (High), carries a 3.387 cumulative grade point average in economics/kinesiology. He's the Owls' fourth-leading rusher this year with 249 yards and one touchdown on 49 carries, and he has two receptions for 48 yards and one score.
Baldwin, a senior from Sylvania, Ohio (Toledo St. John's High), has started all 10 games thus far for the Owls this season, helping the Rice rushing attack to the seventh-best rushing average in the country. He carries a 3.368 GPA in political science/policy studies.
Smith, a senior from Plano (High), has also started all 10 games for the Owls. Five of his 29 tackles this year have been for 35 yards in losses. His 3.480 GPA in kinesiology.
Jackson, a junior from New London (West Rusk High), has a 3.340 average in kinesiology. He has started all 10 games for the Owls with 27 tackles, six for 29 yards in losses.
Ortega, a junior from Rockdale, carries a 3.327 GPA in political science/kinesiology. Also a 10-game starter this season, Ortega has 60 tackles, three pass deflections and one fumble recovery.
Rice is 5-5 on the season and plays UT-El Paso in the Owls' Homecoming game Saturday at Rice Stadium (2 pm).
