Football Practice Report #28

TCU coach Dennis Franchione used Monday, normally a day off for the Frogs, to teach his scout teams the Rice option, and Owls coach Ken Hatfield is quick to point out the contribution his scout teams have made this week to his team's preparation for the game.
"We're getting a lot of good work with Kyle Herm and Jeff Vanover at quarterback," he said following Wednesday's practice in Rice Stadium. "They've done a great job, and Don Pinkerton has done another great job at tailback. They've created a lot of problems for us, and our defense has really been hustling in trying to slow them down.
"Their speed has really given us a good look at a lot of what TCU does. It's not quite the same because TCU has done such a great job with its offense, so we'll have to adjust a lot on Saturday."
Herm is from Stanton, Vanover from Diboll, and Pinkerton from Schertz. The three freshmen are redshirting this season.
Hatfield allowed that TCU is probably more familiar with the Owls' schemes than most opponents, having played Rice yearly and having faced Air Force in the past. "They just haven't seen anything like it this year," he added.
Both teams are on winning streaks entering Saturday's game at Rice Stadium (2 pm CDT). The Owls (4-3, 3-0 in the WAC) have won four straight, while TCU (3-3, 2-1) has won its last two.
