Guy Buls enters his first season as an assistant coach for Rice swim and dive in June of 2025.
Buls returns to the Lone Star State after spending a year at the University of Toledo, where he helped coach Rockets' student-athlete Leah Evans several top-10 finishes, including a top-10 postseason finish at the National Invitational Championship.
Buls came to the Glass City after serving three years as an assistant coach at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
During the 2023-24 season, Buls helped HSU's men's program capture its best finish in program history with a seventh-place finish at the Division II NCAA National Championships, including an NCAA record in the 200 free relay and an NCAA title in the 400 free relay, while also being a part of the men's first New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference championship since the 2004-05 season. Also at the 2023-24 NCAA meet, Buls helped coach Kiara Pozvai, who would become HSU's first-ever female national champion after winning the 100 freestyle in a time of 48.88.
In 2022-23, Buls' second year on the Red Wave staff, the men's team matched a program-best ninth-place finish and the women's team took 13th at the DII NCAA Championships.
Buls has also coached in international competition as an assistant coach for the U.S. men's sprinters at the 2023 University World Games in Chengdu, China.
Originally from Brenham, Texas, Buls swam backstroke and breaststroke at Henderson State (2012-16). He served as team captain, was named team MVP, and swam a 4:02.03 in the 400 IM which still ranks fourth in Red Wave history. Buls was a four-time academic all-conference honoree and earned a degree in business finance in 2016.
