Lakevia Boykin is entering her fifth season at Rice for the 2024-25 season, having initially joined the Owls as part of Coach Edmonds' initial coaching staff for the 2021-22 season.
The 2024-25 season saw the Owls advancing to the AAC Championship game in back-to-back seasons, upsetting the overall top seed and regular season champion UTSA in the quarterfinals. Boykin's positional group saw several conference honors, with Dominique Ennis earning All-AAC Second Team recognition, while Victoria Flores was named to the All-Newcomer Team.
The Owls capped off a historic season in 2023-24, claiming Rice Athletic's first-ever AAC title in the debut season in the conference. The Owls won four games in four days to earn Rice's fourth-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2019, where the Owls fell to then-defending national champions LSU in a hard-fought 70-60 defeat. All-Conference Third Teamer Malia Fisher was named AAC Tournament MVP, while Destiny Jackson and Sussy Ngulefac were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Boykin helped guide Jackson into becoming the first 1,000 points scorer in the Edmonds era and 25th overall in Rice history. Jackson closed her career ranked first in games played, sixth in assists, ninth in steals, and 13th in scoring.
During the 2022-23 season, Rice saw a historic start with an undefeated non-conference slate at 9-0 featuring wins over Texas A&M and TCU. Boykin helped the Owls achieve the third-highest win total for a season at 23 and also was crucial for the Owls postseason win at BYU in the WNIT First Round. Rice finished the season 23-9 and made the C-USA quarterfinals. Malia Fisher and Ashlee Austin both earned selections to the All-C-USA Second Team.
Following the 2022-23 season, Boykin and Nick Grant were both named to the Silver Waves Media Top 75 Impactful Mid Major Women's Basketball Assistant Coaches list. This marked the second consecutive year that Boykin received honors from the organization.
Despite losing four of five starters from the previous year's team, Boykin and the Owls closed the 2021-22 season with a ton of momentum by winning nine of their final 15 games and advancing to the quarterfinals of the C-USA Championship with a convincing 80-62 win over Marshall in the second round.
Injuries limited the Owls to an eight-man rotation for much of the season, but a young Rice team with three freshmen in the starting lineup went 8-4 over their final 12 C-USA contests.
Rice had three players earn All-C-USA postseason honors, with sophomore forward Ashlee Austin earning a spot on the Second Team. Malia Fisher was named to the All-Freshman Team while also earning All-Conference Honorable Mention accolades, while Destiny Jackson also earned Honorable Mention honors in her first full season as the team's starting point guard.
Boykin was named to the Silver Waves Media's Most Impactful Mid-Major Assistant Coaches list. In addition, Boykin was named one of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 honorees.
Boykin spent four seasons (2017-21) as an assistant coach and primary recruiting coordinator for the Davidson women’s basketball team, serving under head coach Gayle Fulks.
Boykin, who was a guard development coach, coached four Atlantic 10 all-conference student-athletes for the Wildcats and played a critical role in the team’s growth. In 2018-19 the ‘Cats were picked to finish 11th in the preseason poll only to finish tied for fourth in the A-10 standings with a program-best 10-6 mark in league play.
In 2019-20, the Wildcats finished with their second straight season with a winning record.
Prior to Davidson, Boykin was video coordinator for the Wake Forest women’s basketball program, where she was also a four-year letterwinner for the Demon Deacons from 2009-13.
As a student-athlete, Boykin played in 130 games and set the school record for most career games played. As a senior, she finished second on the team in scoring (14.4 points per game) while totaling 1,309 career points, which ranked her 11th all-time in program history. Along the way she made 167 three-pointers, which sits fifth in program history, and earned All-ACC honors her final two seasons.
After graduating from Wake Forest with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Boykin played professionally overseas.
