Lucas Reed was promoted to tight ends coach in March of 2023 after spending two years in a quality control role with the Owls' quarterbacks.
In 2024, Reed lost his returning honors candidate (Boen Groen) to injury after four games, but offset that loss with the increased productivity from Elijah Mojarro and Brown transfer Graham Walker, who made the switch from wide receiver after Groen’s injury. Mojarro (22-215) and Walker (24-252) combined for 46 receptions, 467 yards and three scores and, along with Groen’s 12 catches, accounted for nearly 20% of the Owls’ completions in 2024.
In his first season with the tight ends, Reed saw Boden Groen develop into one of the Owls’ most productive receiver options as a tight end since Van McDonald as he finished second among all AAC tight ends with 39 receptions and was third in yards (383) and fifth in touchdowns (3). His reception total was the most for an Owl TE since McDonald had 44 in 2011. Cal transfer Elijah Mojarro, steadily increased his workload after joining the team prior to the start of training camp and enjoyed his greatest productivity over the final quarter of the season.
Reed joined the Owls staff in 2018 and served as an offensive graduate assistant coach for two seasons after working with the running backs prior to working as a special teams assistant in his first season.
A 2017 graduate of Ouachita Baptist (double major in Accounting & Finance), Reed was a four-year letterman and three-year team captain as a quarterback. He stepped in as the starter in 2016 after an injury and threw for 857 yards and five touchdowns, highlighted by a win over arch-rival Henderson State to close the season.
