Johannesdottir Breaks Own Record at American Championships

BIRMINGHAM – The Rice women's track and field team saw a month-long school record get shattered during the opening day of the American Championships on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
Julia Johannesdottir opened the day's competition by breaking her own school record and the meet record in the 60m hurdles (pentathlon hurdles for meet), with a time of 8.22s.
Johannesdottir ended seventh in the pentathlon, while also qualifying for the 60m hurdles finals tomorrow afternoon.
Alice Taylor placed fifth in the pentathlon after a stellar 800m to close the event.
On the track, the DMR squad of Cullen Merrell, Sydney Freeman, Susie Nestor and Miranda Schriver placed fifth.
Saniya Friendly qualified in two finals tomorrow, earning spots in the 60m and the 200m.
Three Owls secured spots in the 400m finals, with Barbora Malíková, Arayna Mickles and Riana Green all qualifying.
In the 800m, Susie Nestor advanced to the finals while Miranda Schriver earned a spot in the mile finals.

"Incredible start to the day with Julia Johannesdottir breaking her own school record with an early morning 8.22 time. We had other outstanding performances, with Saniya Friendly setting season bests in the 60m and 200m. Barbora, Arayna, and Riana all advanced in the 400m, and we had Susie in the 800m and Miranda in the mile, also moving to the finals. Alice Taylor had a great pentathlon, capped off with a tremendous 800m. The DMR squad of Cullen, Sydney, Susie and Miranda closed the day to finish fifth in a great effort. We are looking forward to tomorrow."
