
Hot Shooting Fuels Rice Past Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON – The Rice women's basketball team shot lights out en route to an 83-75 win over Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. Rice earns its seventh consecutive win to move to 12-3 (2-0 American), while Florida Atlantic falls to 6-8 (0-2 American).
Victoria Flores led the Owls with 21 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Aniah Alexis added 19 points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist. Hailey Adams netted 11 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and a block, with Shelby Hayes recording 11 points, three rebounds and a steal. Dominique Ennis rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, three assists and two steals.
As a team, Rice shot 32-of-63 (50.8%) from the floor and a blistering 10-of-19 (52.6%) from three-point range. The Owls were 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the free throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
A pair of Florida Atlantic scores opened the game before Adams got Rice on the board. Ennis followed with a triple, with consecutive Alexis scores making it a 10-0 run. After the home team got within four, Ennis and Adams hit back-to-back shots to extend the lead to nine. Rice led 20-16 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter
Myah Hazelton and Flores traded the opening second quarter scores with Florida Atlantic before Alexis hit another shot to extend the lead to nine. Flores followed with a three and a Hayes layup built the lead to 14 points. Rice led 38-30 at halftime.
Third Quarter
A quick run cut Rice's lead down to one before Flores sank a three. Leading by two, Alexis added another Owl three to extend the lead, with Adams adding a layup as Rice went up seven. Adams later pushed the lead to 49-39 with an and-one conversion. After several back-and-forth scores, Jordin Blackmon put the Owls up 11, but a Florida Atlantic run gave Rice a 61-53 lead after three.
Fourth Quarter
Hayes countered several Florida Atlantic scores early to keep the lead at eight. With the lead down to four, Alexis' layup, followed by a Flores three, pushed the lead up to nine. Within six, Louann Battiston sank a triple with Hayes tacking on a score to take an 11-point lead. With Rice up nine, Flores converted an old-fashioned three-point play and a traditional three-pointer to seal Rice's seventh-consecutive win.
