Kapasi Rallies Owls into Reginal Finals

STANFORD, Calif. – The Rice men's tennis team opened ITA Kickoff Weekend with a 4-3 victory over Oregon on Friday.
The Owls (2-1) took an early lead by securing the doubles point. Oregon struck first when Vlad Breazu and Declan Galligan defeated Rafael Botran and Gabriel Porras 6-0. Rice answered on court two as Kabeer Kapasi and Yari Sarouk evened the doubles competition with a 6-3 win over Sam Olszakowski and Lachlan Robertson. Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro clinched the point for the Owls with a 6-3 victory over Matthew Burton and Pierre Mousesca.
Oregon evened the match at 1-1 in singles play when Russell Soohoo defeated Noey Do 6-2, 6-3. Rice regained the lead as Navarro rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Mousesca on court two. The Ducks tied the match at 2-2 after Robertson earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Porras.
Botron put Rice back in front with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Olszakowski, but Oregon answered once again as Breazu defeated Kuzmenok 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to knot the score at 3-3. Kapasi clinched the match for the Owls on court four, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Burton 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Rice will face host No. 3 Stanford on Saturday at 11 a.m. with a berth to the NCAA Indoor National Championship on the line.
