Fourth Owl to be honored
Rice senior safety Plae Wyatt is one of 22 college football players and one head coach who have been named to the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, which was announced on Tuesday.
Wyatt is the fourth Owl to be honored since the program began in 1992, joining Corey Seymour (1993), Raymorris Barnes (2004), and Driphus Jackson (2015).
This year's team was selected from a record 195 nominees, submitted by college sports information directors and coaches nationwide, spotlighting student-athletes who lead with purpose, from fighting substance abuse to creating opportunities for youth and families.
For the second year, Allstate is partnering with the Wuerffel Foundation to unify two of college football's most meaningful community service honors: the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy.
Fans can vote at ESPN.com/Allstate through Nov. 10 for one of 11 FBS honorees, including Wyatt, who will be named the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy recipient and serve as the Good Works Team captain, recognizing their leadership, performance, and impact off the field. All 11 FBS honorees will be invited to New Orleans to participate in a community project before the 2026 Allstate® Sugar Bowl®.
Wyatt was elected a team captain for the Owls in 2025 as he worked his way back from an injury that ended his 2024 season after only 38 snaps in the opening game vs. Sam Houston. In 2023, he led the Owls in tackles with 81 while starting all 13 games.
In the classroom, he earned his undergraduate degree in 2024 while posting a 3.77 GPA and is currently enrolled in the Master's of Global Affairs program. He was a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, a two-time American Conference All-Academic selection, and a Rice Honor Athlete in 2025.
Off the field, Wyatt has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community service, rooted in a multigenerational legacy of giving back. Through the McKinney Yellow Jackets, founded by his father, he has mentored and coached at-risk youth for over six years. He extended this mission by founding the Plae Wyatt Free Youth Football Camp, now entering its second year.
At Rice, he actively serves the Houston community through city events, mentoring, and outreach. He remains consistently active in the community—whether in Dallas or Houston, TX— demonstrating leadership, humility, and a deep dedication to uplifting and empowering those around him.
Wyatt and the Owls will open their 2025 American Conference schedule on Thursday night on the road at Charlotte. Kickoff is set for 6:30 (central) with coverage on ESPN.
