Eyeing a 3-0 Start
Rice returns home Thursday night against Incarnate Word, eyeing the first 3-0 start to a season since 2021. The Owls will then head out to face the defending national champion at North Carolina on Sunday.
Last Time Out
Rice used an offensive explosion Sunday afternoon, putting up six goals en route to the team's first shutout win of the season 6-0 at UTRGV. Mariana Elizondo netted the game-winning goal, as six difference Owls scored goals and another six recorded an assist.
HTX Takeover in the RGV
The Owls had an offensive explosion at UTRGV, dropping six goals in the shutout win. The Owls' six goals are the most in a game since scoring eight against TSU during the 2020-21 season. The six goals are the most scored on the road since Rice had seven at Old Dominion in 2017.
Two Up, Two Down
Mariana Elizondo has opened the 2025 season on fire; netting goals in back-to-back matches, both being game-winning goals. The two goals tie a season high, when she scored twice back in the 2022 season (also the last time she scored before the 2025 campaign).
Take a Chance(y) On Me
Leah Chancey checked into the TopDrawerSoccer Top 100 list to open the 2025 season at No. 67. Chancey led the conference in goals (nine), points (22), shot accuracy (.528), shots on goal per game (1.40), and was second in game-winning goals (4), third in goal per game (.45), and fourth in points per game (1.10). She had a Rice record-breaking and NCAA-leading eight consecutive matches with a goal in 2024 and to no surprise, scored the Owls' opening goal of the 2025 season.
Rice vs. Incarnate Word
This is the third meeting between the two, with the series tied at 1-1. The last meeting came in the 2023 season opener, when the Owls fell on the road 2-0 to UIW. Rice won the first matchup at Holloway Field 5-2 in 2022.
Weekly Honors
Rice had two earn the first conference recognitions of the season with Lilly Reuscher being named American Defensive Player of the Week and Laurel Kelley being named Honorable Mention. Reuscher receives the first conference honor of the season after leading the defensive line to allowing just one goal this past week. Kelley earns conference recognition after recording a point in both matches to open the season. Kelley netted her first career goal at UTRGV while also assisting on the game-winning goal against HCU.
Welcome to *Our* House
The Owls defended Holloway Field fiercely last season, going 10-1-1 at home. The Owls have a 142-59-23 all-time home record. Rice currently has an eight-game unbeaten streak at home against non-conference opponents, going 7-0-1 in that span.
Dash Legend to South Main
Legendary Houston Dash goalkeeper and Olympic bronze medalist Jane Campbell is set to join the Rice soccer staff ahead of the 2025 season as a volunteer coach. Regarded as one of the greatest keepers in the NWSL, Campbell has appeared in over 150 games with the Houston Dash. She has also been part of the United States National Team, making the Olympic team in 2020 and serving as an alternate in 2024. She was voted at the 2023 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year.
