HOUSTON – The Rice women's track and field team will have four athletes competing at the NCAA West Preliminary in College Station, Texas, starting on Thursday, May 29. The competition is hosted by Texas A&M.
Representing Rice will be Saniya Friendly (100m), Riana Green (400m), Alice Taylor (high jump), and Mckyla Van der Westhuizen (javelin).
The Owls were seventh at the AAC Championships, one point off of sixth. Van der Westhuizen claimed the lone event title in the javelin, while Friendly placed second in the 100m and was also sixth in the 200m.
Last year's third-place finisher at the NCAA Championship meet enters this year's prelims with the top seed. Van der Westhuizen is coming off her second consecutive conference title in the javelin last week.
Another NCAA Championships qualifier from last season, Taylor returns after finishing ninth in Eugene a year ago. Taylor finished fourth at the conference meet and enters the prelims seeded 17th.
Two first-time qualifiers for the preliminary meet, Saniya Friendly, enters seeded 34th after a personal best time to finish second at last week's AAC meet. Riana Green also used a personal best time at the AAC meet to qualify, entering seeded 36th.
The NCAA West Preliminary meet is one of two regional events, which serve as the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Athletes qualify for the competition by having one of the top 48 best marks of the region (East or West) in their respective events. In order to advance to the final round in Eugene, Oregon, an athlete must finish among the top 12 (per region) in their respective events.
