
Women's Tennis Season Comes to a Close in Tight Match Against UCSB

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The 39th-ranked Rice Owls women's tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 4-3 defeat by the 32nd-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in the first round of the College Station Regional. Rice concludes the season with a record of 17-7 while UCSB (17-8) will advance to take on Texas A&M on Saturday.
The Gauchos jumped ahead of the Owls in the doubles portion of the match, claiming court two with a 6-1 score before quickly finishing off doubles with a 6-2 win at court one, taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Anushka Ashar and Dinva Ratkovic led 4-3 at the third court when the doubles matches were called.
In singles, Francesca Maguina quickly tied the match with a dominant effort on court three, earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory over her opponent. UCSB then regained the lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win on the first court, but Ratkovic would tie the match a second time with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at the second line.
The Gauchos took a 3-2 lead late in the match after a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 victory on the fourth line, but Saara Orav stymied a UCSB rally on the sixth line to tie the match a third time with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win. The Gauchos would clinch the match on the fifth line with a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2 victory.
