Sarasota, Fla. — The Rice Men's Golf team fired a seven-under par 281 to tie for sixth-place at the AAC Championship.
The Owls finished -13, their best mark in a conference championship, to finish tied with UTSA.
Junior Lukas Boandl, who was back in the lineup after missing yesterday's round due to food poisoning, led Rice with a five-under 67. It's his 20th round or par or better this year and the 35th in his career. It is also his 10th round in the 60's, and 13th in his career. He becomes just the second golfer in school history with at least 10 rounds in the 60's in a season, joining Michael Whitehead, who had 11 in 2010-11.
Freshman Daniel Zou tied for 11th-place at -7 after carding a 71. It's his 20th round of par or better this year. His 54-hole score of 209 tied the lowest by an Owl in conference championship history.
Senior Raghav Chugh carded a 73 to tie for 21st-place at -3. Graduate student Blake Benson posted a 72 to finish +3, in a 40th-place tie. It was his career-best eighth round of par or better this year and the 16th of his career.
Sophomore Reggie Zhu finished in 42nd-place at +4 after posting a 71. It was his 10th round of par or better this year and the 19th of his career.
No. 44 Charlotte defeated No. 33 South Florida in a playoff to win the team championship. USF's Jake Peacock earned medalist honors at -14, two strokes in front of Wichita State's Jose Ramirez.
JUSTIN EMIL QUOTABLE
"There was a low number out there today for us and we came up a few shots short of what I thought we could get out of the round. I'm proud of Lukas (Boandl) for coming back and firing a 67. Daniel (Zou) had a solid week, as well as Raghav (Chugh). Blake came up big with two solid rounds. Jaivir (Pande) came in for one round and played well, and Reggie (Zhu) finished strong. With all that we experienced here in Florida, memories were definitely made for the group. Now we'll wait to see if we have a couple of guys in NCAA Regionals."
NEXT UP
The NCAA Selection Show is next Wednesday, Apr. 30. The Owls will look to have a pair of golfers selected to Regionals.
