HOUSTON - The 65th-ranked Rice Owls men's tennis team took down the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders by a score of 4-0 on Thursday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Rice improves to 8-4 on the year while Corpus Christi falls to 8-4.
Action began in doubles play, where the Owls quickly took control of the match. Petro Kuzmenok and Gabriel Porras at the third line won their match 6-1 to take the first match of doubles play, then Yair Sarouk and Kabeer Kapasi won their match at the second court, 6-3, to claim the doubles point. Eduardo Morais and Arthus de la Bassetiere were up 5-2 at the first court when the match was called.
In singles, Kuzmenok quickly took care of his opponent at the second line, finishing with a score of 6-2, 6-0, to make it 2-0 for Rice. Emir Sendogan made it 3-0 for the Owls shortly after that with a pair of 6-2 set victories at the third court. Rice only needed one more with several close leads at multiple courts, but Kapasi clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 result at the fourth line.
Rice will return to action with a doubleheader on Saturday against the UT Arlington Mavericks and then Abilene Christian Wildcats. Action starts at 10 a.m. from the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
