UAB made two straight triples around an Alem Huseinovic jumper. The Owls pulled within one on an Emory Lanier three, but a 9-3 UAB run gave it its largest lead of the game, 31-24, with 9:31 to play. Rice, however, scored seven straight points to tie the game. After two UAB free throws, Andrew Akuchie made two free throws and Kellen Amos hit a three. After trading baskets, Rice missed its final five shots as the Blazers closed the half on an 8-2 run to go into halftime leading 43-40.

After UAB scored six of the next seven points, the teams went back-and-forth over the next 2:54. With the Blazers holding a one-point lead, Dar made two free throws and Kellen Amos made two free throws. UAB again scored six of the next seven to regain the lead. Akuchie made two free throws, and Dar got a tip-in dunk. But a 10-2 Blazer run gave them a 75-70 lead with 4:15 to play. Caden Powell, though, converted two straight three-point plays. Trae Broadnax then made two with 17 seconds to play to make it a three-point game. The Owls tried to play it out, but Dar fouled Tyren Moore on a three-point attempt with 5.7 seconds left. After missing the first free throw, Moore made the next two. However, on the third, Powell was called for an off-ball foul, putting Yaxel Lendeborg on the line. Lendeborg made both free throws to give UAB a 90-89 lead. Amos then drove down the length of the court and was fouled with 1.8 seconds to play. But Amos missed both free throws, and time expired.
