"I am thrilled to have another opportunity to coach this group of young men this year," Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Scott Abell said. "Having two more weeks of practice is invaluable as we continue to grow this program. The fact that our seniors have the opportunity to end their career with a bowl championship is truly special."
Abell is the second head coach at Rice to reach a bowl game in his initial season, joining Todd Graham who took Rice to the New Orleans Bowl in 2006. Rice has played in bowl games in two of its first three seasons as a member of the American Conference.
Rice has a 7-7 record in bowl games in its history, which began in 1938 when the Owls defeated Colorado 28-13 in the second annual Cotton Bowl. It will mark the eighth appearance in a postseason game for the Owls since 2006.
Texas State finished 6-6 this year, including 3-5 in the Sun Belt. The matchup is a rematch of the 2023 SERVPRO First Responders Bowl, won by the Bobcats, 45-21. The Owls are 2-3 all-time against Texas State. TXST becomes the first team that Rice will face twice in a bowl game.
