HOUSTON — Eleven players scored for Rice, including five in double-figures, as Rice dominated Southwestern Christian, 94-47, in its annual School House Mania game, Wednesday morning at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Story
Rice started strong, opening the game on a 10-2 run. After a SCU three-pointer, Cam Carroll and Eternity Eguagie hit back-to-back threes, as the Owls scored 10 straight. Southwestern Christian scored five of the next seven points, but baskets by Jalen Smith and Bodey Howell sent Rice on a 16-3 run, taking its largest lead of the half at 38-13 with 5:26 to play in the half. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half, with the Owls taking a 48-25 lead into halftime.
Rice started the second half the same as the first, scoring the first seven points. After SCU converted a three-point play, Eguagie made two free throws. The teams then traded buckets before six straight points from the Owls. Southwestern Christian scored 10 of the next 15 points, but the Owls closed the final 8:50 on a 24-5 run.
What Head Coach Rob Lanier Had to Say
"In a game like this, sometimes you're trying to see if your team has the discipline and maturity to do the things that you practice every day. There were some obvious moments where that wasn't the case, but overall, I think we competed. We were a little bit careless with the basketball. In a game like this, when you get a lead and it's evident that you're going to win the game, that's not an excuse to not play the game a certain way. But I thought we settled back in. We shared the basketball and there was an emphasis on us doing a better job of playing with some force at the rim."
The Stats
Rice connected on 53.8% (35-of-65) from the field, 40.7% (11-of-27) from three, and 68.4% (13-of-19) from the free throw line. Southwestern Christian was held to just 27.3% (18-of-66) from the floor, 20.5% (8-of-39) from three, and 50.0% (3-of-6) from the free throw line. Rice also outrebounded the Eagles, 55-to-27.
