
Portello Earns Back-to-Back Weekly Honors

IRVING — Rice swimmer Ava Portello was named American Swimming Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league announced Tuesday.
Portello had a historic week for the Owls, setting a program record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:41.79 and winning the event on the first day of the Phill Hansel Invitational. The finish puts her at the top of the American Conference and 31st in Division I.
She had three individual top-five finishes, including a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.42 and a second-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:26.29, putting her second in the conference this season.
The Owls will compete at the CSCAA Open Water Championship in Sarasota, Florida, on Dec. 13.
