HOUSTON – The Rice swim and dive team carried its momentum through the final day to win the Rice Fall Splash on Saturday at the Rice Competition Pool.
The Owls secured first place with 897 total points. Little Rock finished second with 621, followed by UTRGV in third with 492.
Rice opened the day with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, as Ava Portello, Lily Archibald, Avery Karacz and Bella Zhang posted a time of 3:26.81.
Reese Cole followed with a win in the 100 breaststroke, clocking 55.89, while teammate Zara Bolton placed third at 57.17. Portello claimed first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.81.
Cole earned a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley (2:06.24), and Lily Cramer placed third (2:08.51). Archibald added a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a 57.00, and Ella Dyson won the 1000 freestyle in 10:06.82, with Portello taking second at 10:16.36.
The Owls closed the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as Ava Hamblett, Cole, Archibald and Zhang combined for a time of 1:43.52.
Head coach Seth Huston is pleased with the team's progress at this point in the season.
"We are right where I want us to be," Huston said. "October is a heavy training month. I am looking for how we race and respond from race to race and day to day, and I saw evidence of the training they're putting in. We are in a good place.
"Despite where we are in training, I really like what I saw from Reese Cole this weekend, she showed a lot of good details. Coming off our open water meet, I really like the way Renee Tan was racing this week, better than she has raced before. We really challenged Ella Dyson with her event list this weekend, and she responded with high marks and did a great job in tough events."
The Owls will host Tulane on Nov. 1 for their senior day meet.
