HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's tennis team is set to open the dual meet portion of the 2024-25 season with three matches in two days, starting with the UTRGV Vaqueros on Friday afternoon before taking on the Prairie View A&M Panthers in a doubleheader on Saturday, both at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The matches, which were originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, respectively, were moved up on Thursday afternoon due to the impending frigid weather in the Houston area predicted in the following days.
Rice enters the weekend with two ranked tandems, with the duo of Arthus de la Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi ranking 43rd nationally in the ITA rankings, as well as the duo of Eduardo Morais and Joshua Mandelbaum, who rank at 118th nationally.
Both of Rice's opponents come in having already begun their spring seasons. UTRGV enters with an 0-1 record after falling to the top-ranked Texas Longhorns in Austin, while Prairie View A&M enters with an 0-2 record, falling twice to SMU in Dallas a week ago.
Last season, Rice posted a 17-9 final record, advancing to the AAC Semifinals before falling to top-seeded Memphis by a thin 4-3 margin. Despite that, the Owls still advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, taking on the 15th-seeded Aggies in College Station.
UTRGV finished the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 9-17, but like Rice, advanced all the way to the WAC Semifinals, falling to top-seeded UT Arlington to end the season. PVAMU finished the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 2-22.
