HOUSTON – After fending off numerous chances, Leah Chancey finally broke through for the Rice offense with a goal in the 65th minute to lift Rice past UTRGV 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field. With the win, Rice moves to 3-1 to open the 2024 campaign.
How It Happened
The Owls offense made strides early, with Jules Johnston and Chancey rattling off shots, but the Vaqueros goalie was there to make the saves. Camille Quarterman had another look for the Owls halfway through the half, but the UTRGV defense was there again to make the stop. The two sides went into halftime scoreless.
After making several stops in the early going of the second half, Leah Chancey broke through for the game's opening goal off of passes from Allie Love and Taylor Rish. The Rice defense was put to work the rest of the way, with Faith Hutchins and crew making several timely saves in the closing 20 minutes to preserve the clean sheet for Rice.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"Today was a hot grind, but UTRGV's colors were appropriate… there is 'something in the orange, tells me we're not done.' We showed some great character to grind it out on a hot summer day."
