
Six Owls Named to NABC Honors Court

HOUSTON — The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced its annual Honors Court and for the second straight year, the Owls had six student-athletes earn the distinction, the organization announced.
Sam Alajiki, Travis Evee, Max Fiedler, Alem Huseinovic, Jackson Peakes, and Cameron Sheffield were all named to the Honors Court.
The men's basketball team has also earned the NABC's Team Academic Excellence Award for the 11th time in the last 12 years.
The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize men's basketball programs that completed the 2022-23 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and graduate student men's basketball players who finished the 2022-23 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Alajiki averaged 4.4 points and 2.8 rebounds in 20 games. He scored double-figures twice and at least five points 10 times. In the opening game against St. Thomas, he scored a team-high 17 points on 5-of-5 from three vs. St. Thomas, tying the third-most three-pointers without a miss in school history
Evee and Fiedler become the first Owls to be named to the Honors Court for three straight years. A member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, he earned All-AAC Honor Roll three times. He led the team and was seventh in the league with 16.7 points per game, was third in the league in free throw percentage (.829), fifth in three-pointers made per game (2.3), and ninth in minutes played (33.7), and second on the team with a 34.3% from three. Evee finished his career as the school's all-time leader in three-pointers made (313) and three-pointers attempted (857), third in scoring (1,885), sixth in free throw percentage (82.8%), and eighth in steals (139). The Randolph, Mass., native is the only player in school history with 1,800 career points, 300 rebounds, 300 assists and 125 steals.
Fiedler adds to his honors after being named CSC Academic All-District, Third Team Academic All-America, and the AAC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the fourth straight year he's earned the honor. This past season, Fiedler averaged 9.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists. He was second in the league in rebounding, third in field goal percentage (.663), assists, assist/turnover ratio (2.25), and sixth in double-doubles (9) and defensive rebounds (5.5), while leading the league in offensive rebounds (3.7). The Indialantic, Fla., native finished his career as Rice's all-time leader in rebounds (1,144), assists (571), assist/turnover ratio (1.81), field goal percentage (65.8%), games played (148) and games started (135), while also placing second in blocks (125), eighth in field goals made (601), and 14th in scoring (1,383). He's just the second player in school history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, and is the only player in NCAA Division I history to record 1,000 career points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists, 100 blocks and 100 steals.
A member of the AAC All-Academic Team, Huseinovic averaged 7.8 points, while connecting on 45.1% from the floor. He led the team and was seventh in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.402). In conference games, averaged 9.1 points and was third in the AAC in three-point field goal percentage (.430) and ninth in three-pointers made per game (2.2).
A two-time Conference USA Academic Medalist and member of the Commissioner's Honor Roll and AAC All-Academic Team, Peakes saw action in 15 games, scoring seven points, and recording four rebounds, and three assists.
Sheffield was named to the NABC Honors Court for the second time. A three-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, he was named to the 2023 CSC Academic All-District Team. In his career, he averaged 5.7 points and 4.2 rebounds, and finished his career 20th in school history in three-point field goal percentage (.368).

Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve and enhance the sport. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men's basketball coaches.
