
Four Owls to Represent Women’s T&F at NCAA Championships

EUGENE – The Rice women's track and field team heads to the NCAA Championship meet in Eugene, Oregon, with four athletes representing the Owls at the competition. Rice's four athletes are the most sent to the championship meet since 2014 when the Owls also sent four.
The four-day meet will begin Wednesday, June 5, for the men's competition and Thursday, June 6, for the women's competition. Finals will be on Saturday, June 8.
Rice will be represented by Eliza Kraule (heptathlon), Tara Simpson-Sullivan (hammer throw), Mckyla Van der Westhuizen (javelin) and Alice Taylor (high jump). Simpson-Sullivan, Van der Westhuizen and Taylor all punched tickets to Eugene by finishing in the top 12 in their respective events at the NCAA West Prelims.
Kraule became the first Owl to clinch a spot in the championship meet by ranking in the top 24 for the heptathlon. Her 5,774 points at the AAC Championships ranks her 11th in the nation.
Simpson-Sullivan was the first to punch her ticket from the prelims, finishing eighth in the hammer throw with a throw of 62.65m.
Van der Westhuizen later punched her ticket with a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 55.55m.
Taylor was the final Owl to clinch a spot at the championship meet, clearing the 1.84m bar on her final attempt to finish eighth in the high jump.
