HOUSTON, Texas — Rice men's tennis fell to No. 41 Arkansas, 4-1, on Monday at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center. The match had been moved from the George R. Brown Tennis Center due to weather.
Singles: Due to timing constraints and available courts, the two sides started off with singles matches. After the Razorbacks opened the match with a win at the fourth spot, junior Arthus de la Bassetiere squared the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the third position. In a tightly contested battle, each of the remaining four singles matches either went three sets or featured at least one tiebreak. Ultimately, Arkansas claimed enough of the pivotal points to win at the sixth, fifth and second positions, in order, to clinch the match. At the top spot of the lineup, senior Yasha Zemel led, 5-3, in the third set of his match when the winning point was clinched. The loss snapped Rice's winning streak of eight consecutive matches, tied for the team's longest streak since winning 11 straight during the 2006 season.
Up Next: The Owls return to the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday, April 13, at 11 a.m. (CT) to celebrate senior day against Creighton. Rice will celebrate the careers of Zemel and Trinity Grear as part of the match.
