HOUSTON, Texas — Rice women's tennis celebrated Senior Day with a 4-0 sweep of Prairie View A&M on Saturday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The Owls celebrated the careers of Federica Trevisan and Chie Kezuka prior to the match.
Doubles: The Owls posted a dominant doubles portion of the match. Junior Saara Orav and sophomore Darya Schwartzman won, 6-0, at the second position before freshmen Divna Ratkovic and Anushka Ashar matched the 6-0 win at the third position to clinch the doubles point. At the top spot in the lineup, graduate senior Chie Kezuka and senior Federica Trevisan also led, 5-0, when the match was suspended.
Singles: Rice continued its strong showing in singles play with a trio of straight-set wins to clinch the win in the team's home finale. Trevisan concluded her home career with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the first position. Orav put the Owls on the precipice of victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the fourth position and Ratkovic won the race for the clinching point, winning at the second spot, 6-1, 6-2. At the third position, Kezuka also led, 6-2, 4-1, at the time the match was clinched. Freshman Nithesa Selvaraj led, 6-0, 4-1, at the fifth position and Ashar led, 6-3, 3-0, at the No. 6s when the match was suspended.
Head coach Elizabeth Schmidt: "Obviously, it's always a bittersweet day when you have players playing their final home match. It's just nice to get out here on our home courts one more time with Chie and Fedi and it was fun to celebrate them and reflect back on all they've done at Rice and how much they made an impact on our program. In terms of performance, solid end of the season. Coming off a pretty intense weekend last weekend in Florida where we had three very tough and physical matches. A quick turnaround coming out today and doing the job and taking care of business as a nice end to the regular season. Now we'll set our sights on the AAC tournament. Obviously, it's a very deep conference and should be a really good test and we're excited to get out there and compete for a championship.
On seniors Federica Trevisan and Chie Kezuka
"I could go on and on about both of them. Even though Chie has only been here a year, she's made a great impact on the team with her attitude. Obviously her play, but her attitude and adding a tough-minded culture. Fedi has just been a difference maker on the court and off the court. The growth that she's had the last four years has been remarkable and it's a testament to her and the energy she's put in to continue to grow and get better each day."
Up Next: Rice heads to Dallas, Texas, for the AAC Championships on Wednesday through Sunday, April 17-21.
