HOUSTON, Texas — Rice women's tennis head coach Elizabeth Schmidt announced on Monday the signing of Fernanda Martinez to the 2024 roster.
"We are looking forward to Fernanda joining us in August," Schmidt said. "From getting to know Fer and her family in the recruiting process, we saw quickly that she would be a great fit at Rice. Not only has she excelled on the court, but she is also a diligent student and a great person. We are excited for her to be on our team and wearing the Rice R."
Martinez joins the Owls out of Mexico City, Mexico, and was an online attendant at Laurel Springs School. Martinez obtained a career-high ranking of 74th in the ITF Pro rankings in August of 2023. In 2023, Martinez earned a silver medal in the Nation's Cup at the CentroAmerican Junior Games in El Salvador. She was a three-time ITF champion in 2021, winning a doubles title at the J4 Cancun and claiming both the singles and doubles title at the J4 Queretaro. Martinez also won a silver medal in doubles at the Junior Pan American Games in 2021 in Colombia.
