Brings over 30 years of experiene to South Main
Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren formally announced on Friday the addition of Bobby Kennedy as the Owls' new wide receivers coach. He takes over for Mike Kershaw, who guided the Rice receivers for five years before being named the new head coach at Mississippi College in December.
Kennedy brings over 30 years of coaching experience to Rice, including seven seasons at Texas from 2004 to 2010 where his receivers played a key role in the Longhorn's 2005 BCS title and a return to the national championship game in 2009. In addition to his seven seasons in the Big XII, he has coached in the Pac-12 for a combined 11 seasons (Stanford 2018-22; 2010-11; Washington 2002-03 and Arizona 2001), as well as three seasons in the Big Ten at Iowa (2013-16), and six in the ACC at Wake Forest (1995-2000) after beginning his career in the Mountain West at Wyoming (1993-94).
"I could not think of a better person to take over as our receivers coach than Bobby Kennedy," Bloomgren stated. "He was on a national championship staff at Texas under Mack Brown as a coach and recruiting coordinator and that experience has allowed him to continuously recruit top Texas talent over the past two decades. He joined the Stanford staff the year after I came to Rice, but I know how crucial he was to JJ Arcega-Whiteside's monster year and his being drafted in the second round by the Eagles.
"Bobby has been at the top of his profession for over 30 years and I can't wait to see him work with the talented men we have in our receivers room and hit the recruiting trail looking for the next great Owls," Bloomgren added.
Kennedy has coached in 17 bowl games, including four BCS contests (two BCS championship games, two Rose Bowls and one Fiesta Bowl).
He has produced multiple All-Americans and NFL draft picks including Reggie Williams (Washington); Quan Cosby, Jordan Shipley, Limas Sweed and Marquise Goodwin (Texas); Arcega-Whiteside (Stanford); and Ryan Yarborough and Marcus Harris (Wyoming). He also mentored future All-American Troy Drayton and Kyle Brady as a graduate assistant at Penn State in 1992.
