Men's Tennis Prepares for Matches at UTA, SMU

In Brief: Rice men's tennis prepares for a tandem of matches in the DFW area. The Owls will take on UT Arlington on Friday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. (CT), before wrapping up the weekend at SMU on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 5 p.m. (CT).
The Schedule: Friday: at UT Arlington - 2 p.m. CT | Saturday: at SMU - 5 p.m. CT

Rice's match versus the Mustangs was moved to Saturday at 5 p.m. (CT) due to weather concerns. The match was also moved to the Birch Tennis Center in Keller, Texas.
The Owls: Rice is 4-3 on the year after splitting a pair of matches last week in Louisiana. The Owls earned a 4-2 win at Tulane, Rice's first victory over the Green Wave since 2016 and their first road victory in the series since 2011. Senior Trinity Grear provided the clinching point in a third-set victory at the second position, coming back from 5-0 down in the final set for the win. The Owls also received singles victories from juniors Arthus de la Bassetiere and Emir Sendogan plus sophomore Kabeer Kapasi to clinch the victory prior to doubles play.
In the second match of the weekend, Rice fell to LSU, 6-1. Grear gave the Owls their lone point with a straight-sets victory at the second spot of singles play. Rice forced a further three singles matches to go a full three sets but was unable to close the gap on the Tigers.
The Opposition: UT Arlington is 1-2 this season versus Division-I competition with a win over Prairie View A&M in addition to losses against Oklahoma and North Alabama. Friday will be only the third time the Owls will face the Mavericks on the road, with Rice winning each of the previous two road outings in 2002 and 2004. The Owls are 19-1 all-time against UTA and won each of the first 19 meetings in the series. The Mavericks won the most recent matchup, 4-2, on March 12, 2022, in Houston.
SMU is currently 5-3 on the season with wins over Hawaii, Prairie View A&M (twice), UAB and Texas Tech. The Owls and Mustangs have met 28 times previously, with Rice posting a 22-26 mark in those contests and a 6-11 record on the road. SMU is on a four-match winning streak in the series. The Owls' last win over the Mustangs was a 6-1 win in Dallas on March 10, 2019.
