2/4/2024 5:15:00 PM | Men's Tennis
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — Rice men's tennis battled in singles action but fell short to LSU, 4-1, on Sunday at the LSU Tennis Complex.
Doubles: In doubles, sophomore Kabeer Kapasi and freshman Petro Kuzmenok combined for a 6-3 victory at the third position. The Tigers, however, claimed wins at the top two spots to take the first lead of the match.
Singles: Senior Trinity Grear continued a strong weekend after delivering the clinching point in Rice's victory over Tulane on Saturday. Grear tied the match with a victory at the second position, 6-2, 6-3. The Owls forced three third sets in the remaining five matches as Kuzmenok and juniors Arthus de la Bassetiere and Emir Sendogan each forced their matches to go the distance. LSU, however, maintained their advantage through to clinching the match at the remaining positions of singles play.
Head coach Efe Ustundag: "Regardless of the 6-1 loss, this was as close of a match as it gets. Credit to LSU; they played the end of the sets better than we did today. On two separate occasions, we had match points to add two more wins but, unfortunately, we fell short. We also had some chances in doubles as well. Overall, a really competitive college match. Things we did better yesterday, unfortunately LSU did better today."
Up Next: The Owls head to Arlington, Texas, to face UT Arlington on Friday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. (CT).
