HOUSTON – Rice connected on 68.0% in the second half to key a dominant finish in a 68-46 victory over Prairie View A&M in its non-conference finale, Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Story
Rice missed seven of its first eight shots as Prairie View A&M jumped out to a 9-3 lead. The Owls scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the game at 11. However, they missed six straight shots as the Panthers went on a 10-3 run to take its largest lead of the game, 21-14, with 5:31 to play. Denver Anglin's three capped off a 7-2 Rice run to pull within 23-21. Nick Anderson made two free throws and Tanahj Pettway's jumper pushed Prairie View's lead to six. But a jumper from Trae Broadnax sent Rice into halftime trailing 27-23.
Rice came out strong in the second half. Caden Powell made a jumper and Broadnax found Andrew Akuchie for a dunk. After the Panthers retook the lead, Rice made six straight baskets in a 13-4 run to grab a 40-33 advantage. The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes. But with seven minutes to play, Rice went on a 14-2 run to put the game away, as the Panthers missed eight of their final nine shots.
What Head Coach Rob Lanier Had to Say
"I've been in a lot of locker rooms; a lot of postgame locker rooms, both as an assistant and a head coach. I'm not sure I've ever been more proud of a group than I was of this group tonight. We've established that in order for us to have a chance to be a good or a successful team, whatever that might mean for this group, we have to play with a chip on our shoulder. We did that in the Bahamas, and they felt it. They got a sense of what that feels like. For some reason, since then, we lost it. We haven't played like that since. Coming off a loss, our backs were against the wall. They found a way to come together and restore that chip. Even though it wasn't pretty in the first half, I was excited at halftime about the competitive level. I'm really proud of these guys. It was a real team win."
