Gorji’s Late Goal Results in Draw at Sam Houston
9/7/2023 10:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HUNTSVILLE – Rice scored the game-tying goal twice throughout the night, with Natalie Gorji's goal coming with four minutes left in the match, resulting in a 2-2 draw on the road against Sam Houston.
How It Happened
The Bearkats got the offense rolling quick, with Kennedy Baquero finding the back of the net just over eight minutes into the match. The Owls struck back at the 22:33 mark, with Kallie McKinney's throw in finding Ellen Halseth and eventually Jordyn Mariam, who headed the ball in for her first career goal to even the score at 1-1. Rice had a chance to take the lead in the closing minutes of the first half, with Elizabet Velkova firing a shot and Natalie Diaz having a look on the rebound, but both shots were saved by the Bearkat keeper.
After both sides were quiet on offense to open the second half, the Owls had a chance to take the lead halfway through the 68th minute, with Catarina Albuquerque having a penalty kick. However, once again the Bearkats keeper was there to make the save and keep the game tied. One minute later Sam Houston grabbed the lead with just 20 minutes left to play. Halseth had a chance to tie things up with six minutes left, but her shot was just saved by Savannah Hall, who stretched back to block the shot. After a free kick was awarded to Rice with four minutes left, Sophie Zhang's shot was blocked right in front of Gorji who kicked the ball in to tie the game at 2-2. The Bearkats looked to take the lead once again, but Ann Stephanie Fortin's save sealed the 2-2 draw.
