
Rice Falls to No. 5 Stanford

HOUSTON – The Rice Volleyball team hung with No. 5 Stanford before falling in straight sets (25-17, 26-24, 25-21), Tuesday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Owls were held to .106 hitting while holding Stanford to .234, well below its average. Junior middle blocker Kaitlyn Knobbe led Rice with seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Danyle Courtley added six kills while senior outside hitter Sahara Maruska had five.
Fifth-year senior Satasha Kostelecky was efficient in the middle, hitting four-of-seven for a .571 percentage.
Junior setter Izzy Rawlings recorded 25 assists and senior libero Nia McCardell added 14 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
Stanford took the opening set, 25-17. The team battled through the first 12 points, playing to a six-all tie. But the Cardinal rattled off seven straight points. Rice cut the deficit to within 18-14, but Stanford closed on a 7-3 run. Stanford hit .290 in the set while Rice was held to .067.
Second Set
The teams battled neck-and-neck before Stanford won out, 26-24. With the Cardinal leading 11-7, Rice chipped away at the deficit, eventually tying the match at 19. Stanford took a 24-22 lead, but Rice staved off two set points, tying it at 24. But two straight points gave Stanford the set. Rice hit .146 in the set while holding the Cardinal to just .186. Knobbe led the Owls with a .571 hitting percentage (4 kills/7 attempts).
Third Set
The Owls came out strong, jumping out to a 5-3 advantage. However, Stanford went on an 8-2 run. Rice pulled within one at 14-13, but three straight points pushed it back to four. After two points by the Owls, Stanford scored five of six points to take a 22-16 lead. Rice cut the deficit in half, but a kill by the Cardinal gave it a 25-21 victory.

Rice hosts the Rice Invitational, beginning this Friday, September 8 against crosstown foe Houston Christian. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be streamed at ESPN+.
