DENTON – The Mean Green grabbed the lead halfway through the first half and never looked back as North Texas shutout the Owls 6-0 in Denton. The loss drops Rice's record to 2-8-1 (0-2 AAC).
How It Happened
The Mean Green applied pressure early, with Hannah Pimentel fending off several early shots, recording three saves in the opening 12 minutes of the match. North Texas was able to break past the Owl defense in the 26th minute, with Bailey Wesco placing the ball just out of the reach of Pimentel. Ellen Halseth tried even things right after the restart, but her shot got blocked with the rebound shot going wide. The Mean Green looked to double their lead just before the 32nd minute, but Pimentel was there to catch the shot. UNT took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
North Texas doubled its lead four minutes into the second half after a free kick found Devyn Flannery who extended the lead to 2-0. Sophie Zhang looked to cut the deficit in half, but her shot got blocked by a defender. Rice had another chance at the 63:46-minute mark with a free kick from Sarah Piper, but her shot went right into the arms of the UNT keeper. North Texas added its third goal at the 68:35 with a penalty kick goal from Jenna Sheely. Two minutes later, the Mean Green tallied their fourth goal of the match, followed by their fifth goal with 13 minutes remaining. UNT added its final goal in the closing minutes to take a 6-0 win.
