Annual team awards announced
Rice Swimming concluded a memorable 2022-23 campaign by announcing the winners of its five annual awards.
Sophomore Arielle Hayon was named the winner of the Catherine Hannah Award as the team's most valuable performer, senior Lauren McDougall was named the Most Improved Swimmer, freshman Ella Dyson was named Rookie of the Year, senior Zoe Spitz received the Natalie Kirchoff Inspiring Competitor Award and fellow senior Addie Armistead received the Kathryn E. Scholl True Blue Spirt Award.
Hayon repeated as conference champion in the 100 and 200 butterfly events, adding AAC titles to those she captured at the C-USA Championship as a freshman. She also qualified for the NCAA Championship in both events, becoming just the third Owl to have qualified twice in the butterfly events. She also lowered her school record in the 200 butterfly and swam the butterfly leg in the school-record 400 medley relay.
McDougall capped off a stellar senior year by winning the 200 freestyle title at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship, the sixth Owl to win a title at the event. She concluded her career posting the third-fastest 200 freestyle in school history and also entered the Rice Top Five in the 100 and 500 freestyles and swam the final leg on the Owl's school-record 400 medley relay.
Dyson captured the AAC 1,650 freestyle gold medal, clocking the second-fastest time in school history, and added a bronze medal in the 500 free. She captured the individual title at the CSCAA National Open Water Championship in December while leading Rice to the team title.
Spitz re-wrote the school records in the 100 and 200 backstrokes with regularity last season and led off the Owls' chart-topping 400 medley relay that lowered the previous mark by nearly 1.5 seconds.
Armistead joined the list of Rice swimmers honored with the Scholl True Blue Spirit Award for excellence in the pool. The award is presented to the Owl who has shown dedication, discipline, and leadership, but most importantly consistent hard work and commitment to the team concept. Armistead was a four-year letter winner competing in the backstroke and individual medley events and was also a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
