Finishes second in 100 IM and 100 freestyle
Elkhart, Ind: Imogen Meers won a pair of silver medals in the span of 40 minutes to lead Rice on the final day of competition at the 2023 CSCAA National Invitational Championship on Saturday.
The Details: Meers opened the final night of action by breaking 56 seconds in the 100 IM for the first time in her career, finishing second in 55.59, more than a second faster than her previous career best set at last year's NIC. She came in less than an hour to lower her personal best in the 100 free from 49.49 at the AAC Championship to 49.43, only .06 behind winner Abby Samansky of Tennessee. She scored a total of 59 points over the weekend, the fifth-highest individual point total (59). Teammate Lauren McDougall, who captured the NIC title in the 200 freestyle on Friday night, just missed a spot on the podium with Meers, finishing fourth in 49.65. She ranked 13th in the meet with 52 points. Distance swimmers Ella Dyson (6th), Shannon Campbell (7th) and Amelia Kane (10th) each finished in the to 10 in the 1,000 free while Dyson went on to finish seventh in the 1650 free, followed by Kane (13th) and Campbell (20th). Rice finished with 315 points to finish 11th in the team standings.
Seth Huston: "Imogen had a great day of racing today. She had solid morning swims, but tonight she dropped the hammer. Moving up six spots from the morning to a runner-up finish in the 100 IM and then following up less than 40 minutes later with a near-miss 100 freestyle for her second runner-up finish. Imogen epitomized an 'anything is possible' approach and a relentless competitive spirit today.
I was really happy with Lauren McDougall's fourth place finish in the 100 free and all three of our distance swimmers earned championship finals performances in the 1000 free."
Up Next: Arielle Hayon will represent Rice at the NCAA Championships next week in Knoxville, Tennessee, swimming the 100 and 200 butterfly.
