Sixth Owl to win an individual title
Elkhart, Ind: Lauren McDougall made her final 200-yard freestyle for Rice one to remember, running down the leaders over the final 50 yards to become the sixth Owl to win an individual title at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship on Friday night.
The Details: McDougall, who was the silver medalist in the 200 two weeks earlier at the AAC Championship and finished seventh in the event at last year's NIC, ran down Monica Gumina of Queens University and Indiana's Elyse Heiser with a powerful final turn and reached the wall in 1:47.09. Guminaq was second in 1:47.46 and Heiser, who had qualified second in the morning, was third in 1:47.51. Rice remained 12th in the team standings, adding 110 points in the night. In addition to McDougall's title, the Owls added points in the 400 IM with Amelia Kane finishing fourth and Lily Cramer following right behind in fifth. Imogen Meers finished 17th in the 100 backstroke and then joined with McDougall, Cramer and Kane to finish sixth the 800 free relay.
Seth Huston: "Watching Lauren win that 200 free at this National meet was one of those moments where you know as a coach that she earned and deserved that championship. Lauren has been a great competitor that has had more than her share of being on the wrong side of finishes in big races. I am really proud of her perseverance. Our IMers raced great tonight and then both of them, Lauren and Imogen put together our best relay of the meet in the 800."
Up Next: Competition wraps up on Saturday with titles decided in the 1,000 and 1,650 free, 100 IM, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and concludes with the 400 free relay.
