AUSTIN, Texas — Rice battled No. 19 Texas for most of the game, but the Longhorns hot shooting was too much as the Owls dropped an 80-64 decision Wednesday night from the Moody Center.
The Story
Texas made seven of its first nine shots to take a 17-8 lead, seven minutes into the game. After Noah Shelby drilled a three-pointer, the Longhorns scored five straight to take a 22-11 lead. Mekhi Mason then hit Akuchie down the lane for a dunk as Rice went on a 12-5 run to pull within 32-27. However, Texas outscored the Owls, 9-5, in the final three minutes as Rice went into halftime trailing, 41-32.

The teams went back-and-forth over the next 2:51, Texas extended the lead to 17. Travis Evee then made a layup and Anthony Selden converted a three-point play that cut the deficit to 12 with 6:22 to play. But Texas pulled away with an 11-3 run, pushing its lead to as many as 20 points.

What Head Coach Scott Pera Had to Say
"Sometimes, it's pretty simple. (Texas) played better. I'll watch the film and make corrections on all of the things that we can do for us to play better, but the better team played better tonight. I think we are capable of playing a game that can beat this team. We didn't do it tonight. The credit is to them. They deserved to win and they outplayed us."
